Diane Levin
CHIEF DEPUTY DIRECTOR


In October 2008, Diane Levin began her role as Chief Deputy Director of First 5 California. In this position, she is a member of the Executive Director’s decision-making team, providing input on sensitive and complex State commission decisions related to legal, policy, program, fiscal, and operational issues. She directs the work of the First 5 California division managers, and directs and develops organizational systems and policies to provide quality and cost-effective services to First 5 California stakeholders.

Before joining First 5 California, Diane was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to serve as Policy Director for the Office of the Secretary of Education (OSE), where her work included leading and coordinating the development of the Governor’s education policy agenda along with obtaining information and feedback from education stakeholders to help shape those policies.

Prior to her OSE appointment, Diane worked in the California Department of Education, where she was the Administrator of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Implementation Office. Her responsibilities included coordination of NCLB efforts throughout the Department and with school districts. In addition, she was responsible for the development and oversight of the Department’s redesigned Categorical Program Monitoring (CPM) process. Before that, she worked in the Superintendent’s Executive Office during both the O’Connell and Eastin administrations. For most of her tenure at CDE, she served as a language arts consultant and was one of the authors of the 1999 Reading-Language Arts Framework.

In 2007-08, Diane served as the Secretary of Education’s representative on the First 5 California Commission, the Advisory Committee on Before- and After-School Programs, the California Association of Administrators of State and Federal Education Programs, and the California Writing Project. In addition, for nearly fourteen years, she served as the Superintendent’s representative on the executive board of the California Reading Association. She is a credentialed teacher and completed her graduate work in the area of Reading instruction.
